Gas chromatograph Shimadzu GC-17A and UniChrom

Shimadzu GC-17A

Producer: Shimadzu Corp.

Highlights

Gas chromatograph GC-17A is positioned as "work horse" for routine analyses either in industrial or laboratory environment. With its wide environmental working conditions it is suitable for most regions form north to south pole.

Comprehensive GC system with capillary options. Flow controller supports pressure, flow and velocity modes. Compact design, big oven, capability for installation up to 3 injectors and detectors.

Limitations

Instrument has not any built in ADC converter.

UniChrom specific

Installation manual: Shimadzu GC-17A and UniChrom (ENG) (PDF)

RS-232 communication option should be installed inside GC. Generally it is a small PCB with 1 (one) ADM202 (or similar) level converter for RS-232. Can be easily made by trained electronic technician. The process of board installation is described here. Board schematic is in installation manual.

Currently the driver supports temperature zones control, flow pressure and velocity setpoints upload. The driver itself has no data collection channel and is intended for using as component of GC-Cluster.

GC-Cluster is a compound driver that makes stack of drivers visible to UniChrom as one monolithic instrument driver. This approach allows use any of the ADC modules, supported by UniChrom.

Support for SS420 ADC is dropped because of:

  • We have no specification of this ADC (if you wish to write the SS420 driver, you are welcome - use UniChrom DDK)
  • We think it is a crazy thing placing ADC board inside the PC (measuring the noise of PC power source is not chromatography)
  • SS420 is narrow dynamic range voltage ADC. Instead use any newer 24-bit ADC. ADC LabNet block can be connected directly to FID output either as to integrator output on rear instrument panel. Using of ADC LabNet allows sufficiently improve instrument capabilities by widening signal dynamic range up to107.

GC-17A drivers included in stock distributive . Installation and configuration is carried with Configuration Editor.

Installation requires the following steps:

  1. Install GC-17A driver. Configure the gas regulators (make the relation between AFC channel and function (Carrier, Split)). Test in standalone mode.
  2. Install ADC driver. Test in standalone mode.
  3. Install GC Cluster driver. Name it to indicate, that GC-17A is inside e.g. "GC-17A cluster". Configure the cluster to use nodes GC-17A as level1 and ADC as level 2.
  4. Start using the "GC-17A cluster".
